Intellectual Property experts since 1962
Cikato Lawyers is one of the oldest IP practices in Uruguay and is considered one of the market leaders.

Cikato Lawyers is one of the oldest IP practices in Uruguay and is considered one of the market leaders, with a depth and breadth of experience second to none. It was founded in 1962 by Dr. Manfredo Cikato, who started his career as a lawyer in the field of Intellectual Property. This is one of our guiding principles to date: we are an IP law firm and not only an IP agency; we provide broad professional advice on IP law, and not only registration services.
We are a full-service IP boutique covering counselling, protection and registration of IP rights, including patents, industrial designs, trademarks, copyrights and domain names. We excel at IP portfolio management and strategic advice. Since 2013 we have been among the top 3 trademark filers in Uruguay.
We are also very active in litigation; in particular, we are well known for representing our clients' interests in anti-counterfeiting and enforcement of their IP rights, not only in Uruguay but also throughout the region. We were the first firm in Uruguay to have a dedicated anti-counterfeiting department, and we remain a market leader in this area of law.
We have also established practices in advertising law and corporate law in order to support our IP clients' needs in those areas. Furthermore, we have one of the only Entertainment Law departments in Uruguay, where our knowledge and experience related to copyright law is a distinct asset.
Among our clients we are proud to count some of the leading multinational companies in the world, as well as many national and regional companies. We have been consistently ranked as a leading IP firm in Uruguay by every IP ranking publication in the market today.

The Trademark Department at Cikato Lawyers is directed by a group of specialized professionals who work daily to maximize the protection of those rights in Uruguay.
The Foreign Trademark Department offers the application and registration of trademarks and geographical indications throughout the world. We work with a large network of highly prestigious law firms, both in Latin America and in the rest of the world.
The Patent Department is made up of a group of professionals whose goal is to implement worldwide strategies for protecting our clients' inventions. Lawyers and engineers are at your disposal to assist you in all the relevant areas.
Patents are divided into three different categories: invention patents (commonly known as “patents”), utility models and industrial designs.
Cikato Lawyers has a specialized Copyright Law department. The group is formed by lawyers with vast experience in copyright in Uruguay and around the world.
Copyright is one of the traditional Intellectual Property rights. Its object is, generally, to protect literary, scientific and artistic works. For example, copyright protects musical compositions, photographs, theatrical works, architectural works, sculptures, software and paintings, among others.
According to Uruguayan law, copyright gives its owner the exclusive right to sell, reproduce, distribute, publish, translate, adapt, transform, communicate or make the work available to the public in any form. In case of an unauthorized use, the owner has the right to initiate judicial actions to stop the use and to recover damages if applicable.
In Uruguay, as in all of Latin America and most countries in Europe, there is a distinction between moral and economic rights. Moral rights include, basically, the right to the integrity of the work and the right of attribution, which cannot be assigned. Economic rights include all the rights to benefit from the exploitation of the work, and can be assigned.
Registration of works is not compulsory under international treaties. Nevertheless, registering a work gives it a certain date, which can be useful as evidence in an eventual judicial proceeding.
Cikato Lawyers has a specialized Entertainment Law & Business Department, which includes services in the areas of music, video, television, film and theatre. Authors, actors, producers and everyone related to the entertainment industry form a complex network of participants that, if not well regulated, could lead to very serious problems. The participants in this industry are many, and strategic contractual regulation is necessary.
Our Entertainment Law team is prepared to provide a service of excellence and professionalism.
Cikato Lawyers has an interdisciplinary team dedicated to litigation.
We do everything possible to avoid litigation, but in some instances it is the only alternative, or the best strategy. That is why every company or person needs professionals with experience in litigation, both in the prior negotiation phase and in the development of lawsuits.
In particular, Cikato Lawyers has the oldest department dedicated to anti-counterfeiting. We are pioneers in this area, and we were the first law firm to create a department dedicated to the fight against piracy.
We have a specialized staff that offers advice in all legal, accounting, tax and notarial aspects of commercial law. Our team of lawyers, accountants, paralegals and notaries public specializes in this area so as to provide up-to-date solutions that fit each client's needs.
In the area of corporations, we have a multidisciplinary team of experts, because the decision-making process in this area requires taking into account different legal, tax and accounting factors.
Within our commercial law practice, we also provide advice on all kinds of contracts, including distribution, franchise, representation, deposit, trust, transport and many others.

Matías re-joined our firm in August 2013 after obtaining his LLM in IP Law and spending four and a half years working in the Legal Department of Philip Morris International in Switzerland.
Given his in-house role and his experience in a European jurisdiction overseeing a multinational portfolio, Matías brings a very unique skill set to the Cikato team. His presence lends the team a perspective and understanding that few, if any, IP firms in Latin America have. He has also brought his knowledge of the very best and latest strategies in IP protection and enforcement to our clients' matters in Uruguay and in the region, resulting in some precedent-setting cases.
His current focus areas at Cikato are trademark portfolio management, trademark prosecution and regulatory litigation.
